SPEECH 111

Saturday, February 18, 2006

Event/Situation: Employee Training Session.
Place: Kearney YMCA (where I work as a swimming instructor). Time 5:00pm-6:30pm, Wednesday February 15, 2006. This situation is a mandatory training session for all YMCA employees. It is called “Child Abuse Awareness” and the topic, obviously enough, is watching out for child abuse among the children that we work with.
Speaker: Janet was our speaker and she was the new employee training coordinator for the YMCA. This was her first presentation. She sat at the head of the table with us through most of the presentation.
Interface: Our speaker required a lot of interaction from the small group (there was only 8 of us) and asked us many questions. We were expected to think of different ways to spot child abuse situations, to prevent child abuse, and to avoid child abuse on our own part. She used a video and pamphlets and a written quiz at the end of the presentation to accompany the oral aspects.
Adapting to Interface: Janet was very aware of us as her audience. When something was unclear, she seemed to know just by our reaction so that she would then clarify.
Feedback: The audience reacted with the speaker throughout the presenation by answering questions, asking questions, and taking notes. Since this was her first presentation, Janet asked us how she did. We replied that she did well even though the presentation lasted half an hour longer than it should have. Overall it was a good informative presentation.

I was surprised to hear that you had to take such a class, but I can see how it would be helpful. I hadn't thought of it being applied in that setting before.
